We watched the sunset from the roof of my friend Cathe’s building, in mid-town on Manhattan’s west side. Soon after, the fireworks started, launched from six barges floating on the Hudson River. The fireworks were synchronized, so the bursts happened simultaneously in a dance, choreographed to music (which we weren’t listening to because no one hauled a radio to the roof).
